I just read...

a Sentinel story where Jim cheats on Blair and it disturbed me to no end. In my Sentinel world, they love each other and they don't cheat. I just can't wrap myself around the idea and don't want to. I guess that's why I love happy endings. I like angst in a story, but I like to see something good come out of it. Does anyone else feel this way? Honestly, I can't see either of the men cheating on the other one. *sigh* I talked with a friend of mine and she read the same story and loved it. So I guess it might be just me. All alone out there with my loving JIm and Blair. LOL (Patt, they aren't real. Calm down.) I would like to see some opinions.

Hugs, Patt

But they are real to us and I'm with you on this one. Partner betrayal is a huge turn off to me. I love angst, too, but not when it comes to one of the partners cheating on the other. I don't think that would happen unless they were drugged or something and then it's not a conscious act.

There are a lot of things in fiction that really squick me, partner betrayal is right up there with death stories, mpreg, genderfucking, and bdsm. Give me a good h/c story anytime instead where one saves the other and it's good at the end.

I agree.

I love the angst, don't get me wrong, but I never want to read partner betrayal in any of my OTPs. Even if they eventually kiss and make up.

I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one. :) I was feeling all alone in my little Sentinel World. LOL How are you doing?

I put my answer underneath someone elses comment. I'm such a spaz. LOL I'm glad to see that we agree on this.

We most certainly do. I'd have to scrub my brain if I read something like that. I want my Jim and Blair faithful.

It bothers me; it hurts me and makes me meep, but they're human and I can see it happening in certain circumstances; heck, I've written it myself in Boundaries and probably other fics too. And it can make for a very powerful, poignant story that does something I love and shows us what's below the surface.

I don't know why I can't handle it. Strange, I know.

You're not alone, Patt. If I wanted something with partner betrayal, I'd watch soaps. And I don't watch soaps, period.

I know, different strokes for different folks, but why bother going into a relationship if the end result is that you're going to cheat on your partner? That's what dating is for. Or being friends with bennies.

(The only way I could see this is if Jim or Blair was treating the other horribly. And in that case, I'd expect the injured partner to make tracks. And again, why would I want to read that?)

Exactly. I agree. Make tracks if you're not happy.

Normally, no, I don't want to read about one cheating on the other, but if this is the story I think it is, then it was powerfully presented ... and there's a chance to fix it. As Jane said, if we think of them as complex human beings and not two dimensional characters, then we need to get to the motivation, the reason one acted the way he did. And then, once the reason is understood, maybe there's a chance to fix it and make the relationship even stronger. So, if this is the Moonridge challenge offering, I've already signed up to fix it ... I think. ::grins::

But they've already cheated. I would never trust them after that. NEver. *sigh* Such serious talk for a Friday. LOL I'm glad you're going to try and fix it.

I don't like to read that stuff either - I'm in it for the romance, especially in Sentinel. There are other fandoms where I might put up with it more, but for the most part I read pairings because I like them together

OH I do like them together too. And can't imagine them with anyone else. That's my problem, I think. :)

Well, I've written a story where Jim cheats on Blair - but I could only make it really short ( a set of five drabbles so 500 words), because even for me there is a limit as to how much angst I can stand. If the story you read is a recent one - I read it and enjoyed it, sure.

I guess it depends on your tolerance for dark fic and unhappy endings. Most of the time I want the happy ending, but just now and again I need some sour with my sweet. Some folks, of course, have different needs. :-)

Yup, different strokes for different folks and all that jazz. I'm actually glad we're not all alike. :)

I'm with you, Patt; I don't want to read about any of my OTPs cheating on each other. There's plenty of "realism" in real life - I don't necessarily need it in my fic! (I'll take it because it can make for an interesting story - and I actually enjoy angst and h/c - but I really don't like cheating fics. Good thing there's a lot of variety in fandom!)

I think everybody has their own ideas on what makes a story good for them, so I"m happy with the way I like things and I hope everyone else is happy with their choices. :)

I like happy endings too, although that's not realistic or er... common in real life. Which is probably why I like it in my fic. I would not want to read partner betrayal either. Once they are together, IMHO, they stay together. 1TL4EVR

Isn't it fun reading about how everyone feels about this? It's nice that they all don't agree with us. Makes it more interesting, I think. :)
