Torchwood

I just got done viewing two episodes of Torchwood and I think I'm probably the only person alive that doesn't think it's a great show. It's too weird for me. Just plain weird. I've heard all of the talk about how great it is, so I watched with anticipation and was left feeling let-down. I like Sci-fi, so that's not the problem. Captain Jack is gorgeous, so that's not the problem. I have no idea what it was, but I won't be watching it again unless, the hubster wants to check it out and I'll watch a couple more with him. I didn't know it was a spinoff of Doctor Who and didn't know that Torchwood is an anagram of Doctor Who. That was interesting to find out. I didn't care for Doctor Who either. Maybe it's Brittish sci-fi I don't care for. Who knows? But at least I watched the two episodes and got to see the lip lock scenes that everyone talked about. :) And that guy that plays Captain Jack is absolutely gorgeous, isn't he? He's prettier than all of the women on the show. LOL

What does everyone love about the show and maybe I'll give it another couple of episodes? I might be missing something.

Have a good Sunday, everyone.

Hugs, Patt

You're not alone, Patt. I really like Dr Who, but haven't been able to get into Torchwood, despite the glorious slashtasticness of it all. I do like Jack Harkness, though. What's not to like? ;-)

Exactly, what's not to like? LOL He's gorgeous. I'm glad to know I'm not the only one that thinks this about the show.

Have a great Sunday. :)

For me, Torchwood isn't so much about the sci-fi, but the characters. Especially Captain Jack. Like you said, he's gorgeous. Plus, he can sing.

Check out John Barrowman Online for more info about him. I've just begun a bit of an obsession w/ the man myself.

The sci-fi just gives the characters something to interact with. If you look at it that way, you might get a different perspective on the show.

I think you hit the nail on the head Patt. An awful lot of Americans just do not 'get' British tv. It's very in your face, the accents are hard to understand, and they speak very quickly. Even though Captain Jack is American, he often speaks rapid fire too. The humor is different. Somtimes too subtle to even notice, sometimes dark, sometimes blatant. It mixes up a lot of styles.

Also, they give very little of the background history of the characters away. You get little hints now and then. Personally, I like that, but it does make it very hard to bond with the characters

Finally, you are coming to it in the second season. The characters developed a lot during the first season. Many Americans have been following this show purely becuase of the writers strike over there, with the view that it was better than nothing. And of course, once hooked, they are totally hooked. LOL.

Don't feel lik you HAVE to like it becuase everyone else did. I felt the same way about Heroes

I might try another two and see if it grows on me. The two I watched were from Season 1, Captain Jack Hawkeness and End of Days.

Ohh right. Well Captain Jack Harkness was a lovely episode. So poingnant and sad. You will have worked out that our Jack is a time agent who 'took' the real guys name when he died. Jack had never met him until that night. Quite a shock. And then to find that he was terrified under all the 'stiff upper lip' thing. sigh. It was really beautiful.

End of Days - the season one finale is very hard to follow. You will have worked out the Jack can't die. Although it came close that time. Jack cant die, becuase he has some of the energy of the Tardis (Dr Who's blue plolice box) inside him and it constantly regenerates him.

In season two, a hinted at character love story from season one becomes reality. Another AMAZING kiss scene in the third epiode that has had fangirls all over the planet hitting the rewind button constantly.

If you can get past the wierd, and the accents, and watch it for the characters, you might start to enjoy it

See, I started to type out the reasons why I like TW and realized I'd probably go over limit XD -- so I've ranted a bit on my own LJ if you want the full disclosure on my viewing reasons *g*

I should've known I'd rant for that long when I decided to try and explain XD

I like TW, but not Dr. Who. David Tenant just so doesn't do it for me and Martha Jones annoys me mightily. But, I really like Brit TV, so I think that makes a difference. It's got a whole different flavor than American television.

I watch TW mainly for Jack and Ianto. I love those two and I'm really enjoying the fact that they're actually dating in season 2. Check out my icon. You wouldn't see that on any channel except BBCAmerica. Network TV wouldn't touch it.
